Gavin Williamson condemns protest at school where Muhammad cartoon shown in religious studies class
Protest at school in West Yorkshire, where a teacher showed a cartoon of Muhammad. The headteacher apologised for the “inappropriate” image used during the lesson and suspended the teacher. Education Secretary Gavin Williamson condemned the protests as ‘completely unacceptable’.
“Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has condemned “completely unacceptable” protests outside a school in West Yorkshire after a teacher was suspended for showing a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad in class. At least 50 demonstrators congregated at Batley Grammar School on Thursday, with images on social media showing the crowd partially blocking the road”.

In the north-central town of Batley, a teacher was suspended for showing students aged thirteen to fourteen in religion class a cartoon of Mohammed – apparently it was the prophet’s “Charlie Hebdo” drawing with a bomb in his turban. The teacher, it is said, wanted to encourage students to think critically and engage in philosophical discourse by asking whether the cartoonist or the authors were responsible for the terrorist attack on the Parisian satirical magazine six years ago. Activists continue to protest, but students show solidarity with their teacher.
“Der Lehrer, heißt es, wollte mit der Frage, ob der Karikaturist oder die Täter Schuld seien an dem Terrorangriff auf das Pariser Satiremagazin vor sechs Jahren, die Schüler zum kritischen Denken und philosophischen Diskurs animieren. Die genauen Umstände sind nicht bekannt. Doch sah sich die Schule wegen des Protestes einiger Eltern und muslimischer Aktivisten veranlasst, den Lehrer zu suspendieren und sich „uneingeschränkt zu entschuldigen für die Verwendung eines völlig unangemessenen Bildes“ in einer Religionsstunde”.

Islamunterricht: Ditib entscheidet wieder mit. Regiert Erdogan in deutsche Schulen hinein?
Since 2012 there have been Islamic religion classes for Muslim students in North Rhine-Westphalia. Now a reorganization has begun. The German Land of North Rhine-Westphalia intends to expand Islamic religious instruction and open a new chapter in cooperation with Islamic associations. As announced on Monday by School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP), a commission with representatives from six Islamic organisations will discuss this topic. Among them is DITIB (Türkisch-Islamische Union der Anstalt für Religion), the largest Islamic organization in Germany; some years ago, the country had suspended all cooperation with DITIB because of its proximity to Ankara, including in the education field.
“DÜSSELDORF. Seit 2012 gibt es für muslimische Schüler in NRW islamischen Religionsunterricht. Nun ist eine Neuordnung eingeleitet. Danach kann die umstrittene Ditib bei Lehrbüchern und Lehrpersonal wieder mitentscheiden”.

Catalunya estudia ampliar el plan piloto de religión islámica a más centros
Teaching Islam in schools in Catalonia: the Ministry of Education proposes to extend the project of teaching Islam in public schools to encourage mutual exchange between cultures living in the same social realities.
“El Departament d’Educació de la Generalitat estudia que el próximo curso se amplíe a más centros el plan piloto para impartir religión islámica en la educación pública iniciado en octubre en seis escuelas e institutos de Barcelona, Baix Llobregat, Girona y Tarragona”.
